Steve Dee DJ Steve Dee is one of the most influential DJs of our time. Not only is he the founding member of the DJ crew, The X-Men, he is the inventor of "beat juggling" (although its original name was "The Funk.") Wanting to make something completely new, "The Funk" was Dee's way of expressing himself through the turntables. Beat juggling is defined as the act of manipulating individual drum beats or vocal phrases, in order to create a unique composition using two turntables. Since the scratch, beat juggling is the only other major technique to hit the Hip Hop DJ scene and has been one of the main components in any DJ battle since Steve introduced it at the legendary New Music Seminar battle. Since 1988, DJ Steve Dee has performed across the world with some of the most influential R&B and Rap artists, to sold out arenas, presidential inaugurations and command royal performances. His first tour was with the legendary Dougie Fresh & the Get Fresh Crew. Members of the Get Fresh Crew include The Cut Mix Mystro DJ Chill Will, and The Cut Professor DJ Barry Bee, who was an influential DJ to all as well as Steve Dee. He has toured with R&B giant Teddy Riley”s Guy and BlackStreet and Wreckx n Effect. He has also DJ'ed for the ever controversial Luther "Luke Skywalker" Campbell of the notorious 2 Live Crew. DJ Steve Dee's prominence in the DJ realm has lead him to perform on the "Dangerous" album of international mega superstar Michael Jackson and with Japanese superstar Toshi Kubota. Not happy with a second place ranking in his first organized DJ competition, the 1987 DMC Northeast Heats, DJ Steve Dee continued to compete in DMC DJ battles every year until 1990. During the 1990 DMC USA Finals, DJ Steve Dee took home the title of runner up. That same year, Dee took time out of his hectic tour and music production schedule to enter and annihilate the competition in the New Music Seminar Battle for World Supremacy by mystifying the judges, crowds and competition with "The Funk." In 1991 he won the DMC East Coast Championship. In 2000, DJ Steve Dee, one of principal DJs who help father the turntablist movement, was inducted into the DMC/Technics DJ Hall of Fame. Steve is the difference between a DJ who just plays records and one who actually manipulates the sounds on the record. DJ Steve Dee has helped elevate DJing to the art form it truly is. In 2001, Steve Dee appeared in the first DJ documentary recorded on film, Doug Pray's "Scratch" which was executive produced by the Hughes Brothers. DJ Steve Dee celebrated his 20th anniversary as a DJ in June, 2005. He continues to motivate, innovate, and celebrate the art form of "The Funk." DJ Steve Dee continuing to master the art of noise! |
