Dego McFarlane

London-based producer/songwriter Dego started making music in 1988 with his fellow pirate-radio DJs. The band of sound-system enthusiasts first released a hip-hop record, but eventually their sound absorbed acid house rhythms and gave birth to the breakbeat genre of drum bass, as well as the collective 4Hero.

The four lads set up their own label Reinforced Records to release such dance music groundbreakers as ising Sun and r. Kirk Nightmare. The label served as a laboratory for Dego to musically explore and fuse sounds under various monikers, while nurturing emerging jungle producers such as Goldie.

When 4Hero, now just Dego and Marc Mac, signed to mini-major Talkin Loud, critics and the public began to take notice. Their third full-length Two Pages a double-disc exposition of the breakbeat formula with a heavier jazz and instrumental influence garnered a Mercury Music Prize nomination and a MOBO award in 1996.

As the new millennium dawned, the two forged ahead with experimental rhythms that married a jazz sensibility with r b melodies and spoken-word vocals, the term future soul umbrella a worldwide movement which includes Kyoto Jazz Massive in Japan; Jill Scott and Vikter Duplaix in Philly; Jazzanova in Berlin; and Bugz in the Attic in London.

Their fourth LP Creative Patterns involved collaborations with several of these musical kindred spirits, and opened Dego up to a world of sonic possibilities. These possibilities found a new home at 2000Black,his new imprint that champions genre-free music while challenging listeners with irregular rhythms under the guise of soulful dance music.

Soon after, Dego has headed out in polar directions with his two latest projects and albums: dkd Future Rage (with Bugz Daz-I-Cue and Kaidi Tatham gets the dancefloor in a broken-beat frenzy, while this year Silhouette Brown (also with Tatham) soothes the emotionally weary with spacey keys and uplifting vocals.

Currently, Dego is finishing up 4Hero fifth LP and refining his live and instrumental sound with Kaidi Tatham.
