Series of percussion workshops across Birmingham in 2004. This was a landmark transistion project in the region
Rhythm section was a 'Music Maker' project funded by National Foundation for Youth Music. During 2004 Punch delivered a series of percussion workshops in 3 areas across Birmingham. The workshop programme was designed with the aim of leaving a lasting legacy of music making in each of the three areas, developing core skills amongst young people and providing a new opportunity for music making amongst young people with limited access to the arts in the past.
Rhythm Section took place in three Education Action Zone areas across Birmingham - Aston/Nechells, Quinton and Cole Heath. Working with after-school clubs in partnership with the EAZs we delivered a programme of workshops focusing on three key elements - South American percussion, West African percussion and South American dance.
We also used this project to address issues of transition between primary and secondary education. This was achieved by working with groups of year 6 primary school pupils and year 7 secondary pupils. Each group then performed to the other group in their school encouraging understanding between feeder school pupils and secondary whilst at the same time breaking down the barriers between these two school years.
