April 2008
We’ve been talking about it for ages and now the BASS Festival is only two months away. June this year sees the return of our third festival celebrating the best of arts and street sounds. Breaking down the barriers, this year’s theme is “The Elements of Hip Hop”. Leading artists from across the world taking part include: Lord Finese, Ursula, Rucker, Rodney P, Black Thought, Omekongo, Napo Masheane, Zena Edwards, Faith 47, Eska, Rick Medina, TuggSTAR, DJ Spooky, Charlie Dark, Stig of the Dump…. The list goes on and on and Ariston. Our brand new website will be launching in a few days so check out bassfestival.co.uk for more info.
After a long and difficult judging process, Punch has finally come to a decision on the winner for the BASS Festival design competition. Everyone at HQ was blown away by the quality and quantity of designs sent in from across the world, After heated discussions and the valuable input of regional design guru Stef Lewandowski (thanks Stef!) the winner is… Pretesh Mistry. Pretesh’s piece is an excellent contemporary take on the four elements of Hip Hop. You can see the winning design here. Well done Pretesh!
In a slight twist of events, an impromptu decision was taken to award two runners-up places. This was due to two of the entries being of such a high standard that we just had to recognize their talents. The two designs by Jason Holroyd and Fiona Battersby can also be seen on the Punch and BASS website. Punch would like to sincerely thank everyone who entered the competition for their time, creativity and considerable talent.
• With support from Punch, MTV and Alizé are searching for the freshest DJ talent to star in the Alizé Remixed tour. The winners will get £1000 cash and hit the turntables alongside DJ legends such as Jazzy Jeff and Grandmaster Flash, plus the competition Ambassadors Steve Sutherland and Shortee Blitz. This isn’t a cutting and scratching contest, it’s about creating the ultimate vibe!
For a chance to win, create a 10 minute mix of your favourite party tracks from the past 21 years, and then upload to the Alizeremixed website. Selected winners will play at one gig each on the tour which will be hitting 5 cities across the UK. The tour will kick of in Birmingham 24th April at the Custard Factory and then will hit Leeds, Manchester, Bristol and finish with a party to end all parties in London town.
