Furiously political, KRS-ONE is known for being one of the first
mcs to speak out against violence and ignorance within hip hop
culture; a true example of a controversial figure that forced
people to think. Starting with nothing but his lyrics in the South
Bronx, KRS-ONE (Kris Parker) set out to teach and preach his
knowledge, and in the process reached millions of young
minds. After forming Boogie Down Productions (BDP) in the
late 80s, he became a pioneer of conscious rap; depicting the black
experience, while his peers were still talking about guns and
girls. Today he is credited as being a major influence upon
current conscious mcs including Talib Kweli and Mos Def. Tracks
such as South Bronx and Sound of da Police sound as good today as
they did then.
